Haughty Eyes — When Self Takes the Throne
Sermon
Day 1 — When Pride Goes Unnoticed
Scripture
“There are six things which the LORD hates… haughty eyes.”
— Proverbs 6:16–17 (NASB95)
Devotional Thought
Pride is rarely obvious. It often hides behind competence, success, self-reliance, and even religious activity. That’s why Proverbs begins with eyes before actions. “Haughty eyes” describe a heart posture that slowly shifts trust away from God and places confidence in self. Pride doesn’t always reject God outright—it subtly replaces Him.
God opposes pride not because He is insecure, but because pride quietly steals intimacy, dulls spiritual sensitivity, and crowns self as king.
Reflection Question
Where might pride be quietly shaping my attitudes, decisions, or prayers?
Daily Confession
I confess that I need God more than I realize. I choose humility over self-exaltation.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, search my heart. Expose any hidden pride and realign my vision so I see myself rightly before You. I want You—not myself—on the throne. Amen.
Day 2 — Praying With God or With Myself
Scripture
“The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself…”
— Luke 18:11 (NASB95)
Devotional Thought
Jesus contrasts two prayers—one impressive, one honest. The Pharisee prayed confidently but depended on himself. The tax collector prayed humbly and depended on mercy. Only one left justified.
Pride can turn prayer into performance. Humility turns prayer into dependence. God responds not to eloquence, but to surrender.
Reflection Question
Do my prayers flow more from dependence on God or confidence in myself?
Daily Confession
I renounce comparison and self-righteousness. I approach God with humility and trust.
Prayer
Father, teach me to pray from a place of need, not performance. Let my prayers flow from a surrendered heart. Amen.
Day 3 — When Pride Blocks Grace
Scripture
“God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
— James 4:6 (NASB95)
Devotional Thought
Scripture says God resists the proud—He sets Himself in opposition. Pride creates friction where grace should flow. Humility, however, makes room for God’s empowering presence.
The Spirit does not fill what pride has already filled. Humility is not weakness—it is spiritual positioning.
Reflection Question
Where has self-reliance replaced prayer and submission in my life?
Daily Confession
I humble myself before the Lord. I make room for His grace to work in me.
Prayer
Lord, I submit myself fully to You. Remove anything in me that resists Your grace. I want to live aligned, not opposed, to Your will. Amen.
Day 4 — The Posture That Releases Power
Scripture
“He emptied Himself… He humbled Himself…”
— Philippians 2:7–8 (NASB95)
Devotional Thought
Jesus chose humility before exaltation. He emptied Himself before being lifted up. The cross came before the crown.
Many desire the power of Pentecost without the posture of Pentecost. But Acts 2 power followed Acts 1 humility, waiting, and surrender. God entrusts power to those who refuse to cling to position.
Reflection Question
What am I clinging to that Jesus is inviting me to release?
Daily Confession
I choose the mind of Christ. I embrace humility as the pathway to God’s power.
Prayer
Jesus, shape my heart with Your humility. Teach me to serve, to wait, and to surrender so Your power can flow freely through my life. Amen.
Day 5 — Clearing the Throne for God
Scripture
“Do not think more highly of yourself than you ought to think.”
— Romans 12:3 (NASB95)
Devotional Thought
Pride is the gateway sin. When self is exalted, unity fractures, love weakens, and revival fades. God removes pride not to shame us—but to protect His presence among us.
Humility clears space. It restores intimacy. It safeguards community. If we desire sustained presence and lasting spiritual fruit, it begins with lowered eyes and surrendered hearts.
Reflection Question
What would change if God alone fully occupied the throne of my heart?
Daily Confession
Jesus is Lord of my life. I step off the throne and yield fully to Him.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, I surrender control, ambition, and self-rule. Reign fully in me. Let my life reflect humility that welcomes Your presence and protects Your work. Amen.
