What God Hates — And Why It Matters
A 5-Day Devotional — North Church
Day 1 — God’s Hatred Is Rooted in Love
Scripture
“There are six things which the LORD hates, yes, seven which are an abomination to Him.”
— Proverbs 6:16 (NASB95)
Devotional Thought
When Scripture says God “hates,” it is not describing rage or rejection—it is revealing protective love. God hates what destroys relationship, truth, and life with Him. Everything listed in Proverbs 6 threatens intimacy with God and health within community. At North Church, we understand that God’s holiness is not opposed to love; it is an expression of love that refuses to tolerate what harms His people.
Reflection Question
Is your understanding of God shaped more by fear of punishment—or by trust in His love and desire for relationship?
Daily Declaration
God’s holiness protects my relationship with Him. I respond to His love with trust and humility.
Prayer
Father, help me see Your heart correctly. Thank You that You oppose what harms me because You love me deeply. Align my heart with Yours today. Amen.
Day 2 — Sin Dulls Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit
Scripture
“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God.”
— Ephesians 4:30 (NASB95)
Devotional Thought
The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force—He is a Person who can be grieved. Sin often dulls spiritual sensitivity before it disrupts spiritual power. You can be gifted and still be grieving the Spirit. At North Church, we value the anointing, the gifts, and the manifest presence of God—but those require sensitivity, humility, and ongoing repentance.
Reflection Question
Is there anything in your life that may be dulling your sensitivity to the Holy Spirit?
Daily Declaration
I guard my sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. I choose alignment over compromise.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, search my heart and show me anything that grieves You. I repent quickly and realign my life with Your presence. Amen.
Day 3 — What God Hates, the Spirit Desires to Heal
Scripture
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”
— James 4:8 (NASB95)
Devotional Thought
God does not expose sin to shame us—He reveals it to heal us. Everything God hates in Proverbs 6 threatens the kind of Spirit-filled life seen in Acts 2: devotion, unity, joy, power, and growth. Revival is sustained not by excitement alone, but by aligned hearts. God removes what He hates so He can release what He loves.
Reflection Question
How might repentance be restoring—not restricting—your walk with God?
Daily Declaration
Repentance restores intimacy. I draw near to God, and He draws near to me.
Prayer
Lord, thank You that Your correction is an invitation to closeness. Cleanse my heart and restore joy, clarity, and spiritual power in my life. Amen.
Day 4 — God Protects the Unity of His People
Scripture
“One who spreads strife among brothers.”
— Proverbs 6:19 (NASB95)
Devotional Thought
The final thing God hates is not private—it’s corporate: sowing division. Unity is spiritual infrastructure. Where unity exists, the Spirit flows freely. Where division spreads, God’s presence is hindered. At North Church, we believe guarding relationships is not optional—it is essential to protecting the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit among us.
Reflection Question
Are your words and attitudes helping protect unity—or unintentionally damaging it?
Daily Declaration
I am a guardian of unity. I choose love, truth, and peace.
Prayer
Jesus, make me a peacemaker in Your body. Guard my words, my attitudes, and my heart so I never become a source of division. Amen.
Day 5 — Alignment Protects the Presence of God
Scripture
“We are a temple of God, and the Spirit of God dwells in us.”
— 1 Corinthians 3:16 (NASB95)
Devotional Thought
This series is not about condemnation—it is about protection. God hates what threatens His dwelling place. He opposes what fractures hearts, destroys trust, and dulls spiritual life because He desires to live among a Spirit-filled people. What God hates, He wants to remove—so He can release what He loves: intimacy, power, joy, and lasting fruit.
Reflection Question
What practical step can you take this week to better protect God’s presence in your life and relationships?
Daily Declaration
I live aligned with God’s heart. His presence is welcomed and protected in my life.
Prayer
Father, I offer my life as a dwelling place for Your Spirit. Remove anything that threatens intimacy with You, and fill me with what You love. Amen.
