Why Trunk or Treat Events

Why does North Church intentionally invests time, energy, and resources in community events such as Trunk or Treat. These events are not mere “extras” in our ministry calendar. They are strategic extensions of our mission to help people experience God, become more like Jesus, and reach our community.

While an event in itself does not make a church healthy, it can serve as a catalyst for connection, discipleship, and evangelism. Properly aligned with our mission, such events become expressions of the Gospel lived out in visible, tangible ways.

Our Starting Point: Health and Honesty

North Church is a healthy and growing congregation with strong ministries and engaged leaders. Yet, we recognize that church health requires ongoing evaluation and refinement. As ministry consultant Tony Morgan reminds church leaders,

We must be willing to make the necessary changes to your worship services, discipleship path, outreach strategy, and family ministry environments that would ultimately lead to church health.¹

Healthy churches do not stagnate; they assess, adapt, and act. Hosting events like Trunk or Treat is one of the ways North Church strengthens community connection, reinforces our values, and models continuous improvement.

The Real “Why” Behind Events

We do not host events merely to attract crowds or fill a calendar. Our purpose is missional and relational. We seek to demonstrate Jesus’ love to our neighbors in a joyful, approachable way.

If even one family encounters Jesus and begins a faith journey because of an event like Trunk or Treat, the investment is eternally worthwhile. Heaven rejoices over one soul who turns to God (Luke 15:7). But the value of these events extends beyond conversions. They shape our church culture, activate servant leadership, and position us as a trustworthy presence in our community.

What These Events Actually Accomplish

Rather than viewing these as one-dimensional “outreach projects,” we see them as multi-layered ministry opportunities that align with North Church’s mission and produce lasting fruit across several dimensions.

Community Connection

  • Builds relationships with our neighbors in a safe, family-centered environment.
  • Provides a positive, trustworthy alternative to secular Halloween activities.
  • Enhances North Church’s visibility and credibility within the Clarksville community.
  • Opens doors for collaboration with local businesses and civic organizations.

Missional Engagement

  • Creates natural opportunities for prayer, Gospel conversations, and church invitations.
  • Allows families unfamiliar with church to experience genuine hospitality and love.
  • Promotes upcoming events such as the Community Thanksgiving Dinner and Food Box Give-A-Way, Christmas services, and Easter outreach.

Discipleship Through Service

  • Empowers members to express their faith through joyful, practical acts of service.
  • Models servant leadership, generosity, and unity across ministries.
  • Identifies and develops new volunteers and emerging leaders.

Church Family Unity

  • Strengthens internal relationships and morale through shared purpose.
  • Encourages creativity and ownership across all departments: North Kids, Altared Youth, North Coffee, and beyond.
  • Fosters a sense of belonging and teamwork that carries into other areas of ministry.

Communication and Momentum

  • Generates organic, uplifting social media content that testifies to our community impact.
  • Builds anticipation for future gatherings, strengthening engagement throughout the year.
  • Creates “memory markers” associated with North Church’s warmth, joy, and presence.
The Biblical Foundation

“Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” — Matthew 5:16 (NASB95)

When we host community events, we are obeying this command. Our light shines through acts of kindness, generosity, and welcome. These are not entertainment moments. They are living testimonies of God’s goodness manifested through His people.

The Broader Perspective

Church growth strategist Mark Blankenship outlines twenty-one compelling reasons for why churches should consider hosting community outreach events such as Trunk or Treat.² These reasons emphasize that such events:

  • Encourage community engagement and partnerships.
  • Showcase the church’s hospitality and creativity.
  • Mobilize volunteers and strengthen discipleship through action.
  • Provide family-safe environments and alternative seasonal activities.
  • Increase visibility, foster unity, and generate return connections.

These principles mirror what we have consistently observed at North Church: community joy, new relationships, and spiritual conversations sparked through simple acts of service and celebration.

The Win

The success of Trunk or Treat is not measured only by attendance numbers or immediate salvations (though both are meaningful.) The true win is when our church family reflects the heart of Christ:

  • When people serve with joy.
  • When families feel loved and welcomed.
  • When our city knows that North Church is for them, not just near them.

These outcomes reveal that our light is shining effectively.

Final Thought

Each year, Trunk or Treat bears fruit: seen and unseen. Families return for services, children encounter kindness in a church setting, and volunteers experience personal renewal through serving. These events are seeds of grace planted in our city, and Jesus alone knows the full harvest.

We invest because this is who we are: a Spirit-filled, Christ-centered church committed to loving our community with excellence and intentionality.

Action Steps for Leaders

As we prepare for future events:

  • Continually communicate the “why” behind each event to your teams.
  • Share testimonies that highlight transformation and connection.
  • Encourage volunteers to view every trunk, smile, and handshake as ministry.
  • Remind everyone: this is not just outreach. It’s discipleship in action.
A Prayer:

“Father, we dedicate this event to You. Let every smile, every word, and every act of service reflect Your love. Holy Spirit, fill this place with Your presence. Use us as vessels of joy, peace, and divine connection. Lord Jesus, let Your light shine brighter than any darkness. Protect every family and draw hearts toward You. We believe this night will bear eternal fruit: souls touched, lives changed, and Your name glorified. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Be blessed, Dr. John Carmichael
